My landlord in Marina decided to hike my rent by 30 percent last month. I refused to pay it, so I had to pack up my entire two-bedroom apartment and move into a short-term rental while I hunt for a cheaper place. That left me with a massive headache. Where do I put all my furniture for the next eight weeks?

I started calling around for storage units and the prices were completely insane. Some places wanted more for a tiny room than I was paying for my car loan. I actually saw a piece on https://www.khaleejtimes.com/ talking about how crazy the rental market has gotten, and it seems like storage facilities are trying to ride that exact same wave. Everyone is overcharging if you sound desperate.

After wasting two days calling random warehouses, I realized I needed a better approach. The key to not getting ripped off here is knowing the going rate before you even pick up the phone. I eventually found this site to check out different local options and get a feel for standard pricing. Once you know what a 100 square foot unit should actually cost, you can spot the bad deals immediately.

Here are a few things I learned to keep the bill down:

* Always ask if they have standard units without heavy AC if you are just storing basic wooden furniture or clothes in sealed boxes.
* Look for warehouses deep in DIP or Al Quoz. Anything closer to the city center will cost you double for zero reason.
* Offer to pay the full duration upfront. I got a nice discount just for doing that instead of paying month to month.

Take your time and do not let the sales reps pressure you into booking on the spot. There is always plenty of empty space available if you look around.
