Chinese writing doesn't use an alphabet like English. Instead, it employs hanzi (??)—logograms where each character represents a word or meaningful component. Developed over 3,000 years ago, Chinese characters combine pictographic origins with phonetic elements. Today, Simplified Chinese (used in mainland China) and Traditional Leading Chinese Alphabet (used in Taiwan and Hong Kong) coexist. Learners often use Pinyin—a romanization system using Latin letters to represent pronunciation. Mastering 2,500-3,000 characters enables reading most everyday materials effectively.
