Royal Challengers Bengaluru booked their place in the Indian Premier League 2026 playoffs with a commanding 23-run win over Punjab Kings at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.
In a high-scoring contest, RCB posted a massive 222/4 and then held their nerve with the ball to restrict Punjab Kings to 199/8. The result not only confirmed Bengaluru’s playoff qualification, but also pushed Punjab to the edge of elimination after their sixth straight defeat.
For RCB fans, this was another statement performance. For PBKS, it was a night that summed up a season that is slipping away.
Venkatesh Iyer Makes the Most of His Opportunity
With limited chances this season, Venkatesh Iyer grabbed his moment in style.
Playing only his second match of the tournament, he looked scratchy early on but settled beautifully. Once he found his rhythm, Punjab’s bowlers had no answer.
Batting alongside Virat Kohli clearly helped. Venkatesh later said Kohli’s communication and calm mindset made a big difference.
His innings changed the momentum completely and earned him the Player of the Match award.
Virat Kohli Provides the Perfect Platform
As he has done so many times for RCB, Kohli anchored the innings with control and authority.
He rotated strike smartly, punished loose deliveries, and ensured there was no dip in momentum after the early overs. More importantly, he guided Venkatesh Iyer through the initial phase when timing the ball was not easy.
That partnership laid the foundation for RCB’s imposing total of 222.
Punjab Kings Lose the Match in the Powerplay
Punjab’s chase of 223 required a strong start.
Instead, they lost Priyansh Arya for a duck in the first over. Prabhsimran Singh and captain Shreyas Iyer followed soon after.
At 23/3, Punjab were already under serious pressure.
Shreyas admitted after the match that the game was effectively lost in the powerplay. When your top three are back in the pavilion almost immediately, chasing a score above 220 becomes incredibly difficult.
Cooper Connolly and Suryansh Shedge Fight Back
To Punjab’s credit, they did not collapse completely.
Cooper Connolly played an aggressive innings of 37, while Suryansh Shedge added 35. Both batters attacked the spinners and briefly gave the home side some hope.
But just when PBKS looked ready to push harder, wickets continued to fall.
That was the story of their innings. Every time momentum began to build, RCB struck.
Shashank Singh Keeps Punjab Alive
The best innings for Punjab came from Shashank Singh.
He smashed 56 off just 27 balls, playing fearless cricket and finding boundaries all around the ground. Along with Marcus Stoinis, he stitched together a valuable partnership that reduced the equation.
For a few overs, the chase felt alive again.
But the required rate kept climbing, and once Stoinis was trapped LBW by Josh Hazlewood, Punjab’s hopes faded quickly.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Hazlewood Set the Tone
RCB’s experienced pace duo made the difference.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar removed Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh in his first two overs, immediately putting Punjab under pressure.
Hazlewood bowled with his usual discipline, mixing yorkers and short balls at crucial moments.
Their control meant Punjab were always chasing the game.
Rasikh Salam Dar Finishes the Job
One of the most impressive performances came from Rasikh Salam Dar.
He picked up three wickets and handled the final over confidently despite the pressure.
For a young bowler to close out such a high-scoring game against powerful hitters says a lot about his temperament.
RCB have found another valuable contributor at exactly the right time.
What This Means for the Playoff Race
This victory makes RCB the first team to officially qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs.
They now look like one of the most balanced sides in the competition, with depth in batting and variety in bowling.
Punjab Kings, on the other hand, remain on 13 points and no longer control their own destiny. Even if they win their final league match, they will still need several other results to go their way.
Their six-match losing streak has turned a promising campaign into a desperate fight for survival.

Final Thoughts
RCB were better in every department.
They batted with authority, bowled with discipline, and stayed calm under pressure. Punjab showed some fight, especially through Shashank Singh, but their poor powerplay cost them dearly.
With momentum on their side, RCB head into the playoffs looking like genuine title contenders.
Punjab Kings now need one final push and a lot of help from other teams to keep their season alive.
