Hi Everyone,
As a Java and Node.js developer, I have worked with both traditional backends and BaaS setups over the years, and this question usually comes down to one thing: speed vs control. Yes, I think BaaS platforms seem cost-efficient and offer greater speed. However, custom backends allot you more control over infrastructure and server-side functions.
With Backend as a Service (BaaS) platforms like Back4App or Supabase, you can move really fast. Auth, database, APIs, all handled for you. It is definitely great for MVPs or early-stage products where getting something live matters more than perfect architecture. You save weeks, sometimes months.
On the flip side, traditional backends give you full control. You design everything your way, which is important once your app grows or needs more complex logic. But it takes more time and ongoing effort to maintain.
Personally, I have seen many teams start with BaaS and then move to custom backend components as they scale. That balance tends to work well in real-world projects.
Curious how others are handling this:
- Are you starting with BaaS or going fully custom from day one?
- Have you ever hit limitations with BaaS that forced you to switch?
- Or do you prefer full control from the beginning?
Would be interesting to hear different experiences.
