I don't usually post stuff like this but I just had to share because for the last nine months I've felt like I was screaming into a void trying to get my workers comp claim handled. I'm a carpenter up in Yonkers and I had a bad fall off some scaffolding back in the spring—tore up my rotator cuff pretty good and needed surgery. The whole process has been a nightmare from the start: my employer's insurance company kept "losing" my paperwork, they sent me to a doctor who said I was fine to go back to work when my own surgeon said absolutely not, and every time I called to ask a question I got bounced around to different people who all acted like I was bothering them. I honestly started to think maybe I was doing something wrong or maybe I just wasn't being persistent enough. Finally a buddy of mine who works in construction management told me that the system isn't really set up for people like us to navigate alone and that I needed someone whose whole job is fighting for injured workers New York because the insurance companies have teams of people whose job is the opposite. I was nervous about hiring someone because I figured it would cost a fortune, but when I finally made the call and explained my situation, the person I spoke with actually listened and seemed to get how frustrating this whole thing has been. They told me what to expect and for the first time I felt like someone was looking out for me instead of just trying to push me through the system. I guess I'm just posting this to say if you're feeling stuck and beat down by this process, don't assume you're the problem or that you just need to try harder—sometimes you really do need someone in your corner who knows how this all works.
