Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is a sudden and often reversible condition in which the kidneys rapidly lose their ability to function properly. It can develop within hours or days and affects the body’s ability to remove waste, regulate fluids, and maintain electrolyte balance. AKI may be caused by dehydration, severe infections, reduced blood flow to the kidneys, certain medications, or urinary tract blockages. Symptoms can include reduced urine output, swelling, fatigue, nausea, shortness of breath, and confusion, though mild cases may have no obvious signs. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are essential to prevent complications and restore kidney function.
