I have been striving to have a better hygiene with my reusable bags particularly grocery bags, lunch bags, and produce bags which are frequently used. This prompted me to begin to consider bag wash routines and think more of the safest and most effective procedures. It is not always obvious how various bag materials have to be cleaned, as they are offered today.

In the case of bag wash procedures, should it be machine washed, hand washed, or special tools used? There are those bags that are insulated, lined in plastic or designed in print and I am afraid that frequent washing would ruin them. Does it have suggested bag wash detergents that are safe to use on food carrying bags and at the same time potent enough to eliminate odors and bacteria?

I am also not sure of the frequency of bag wash. Do reusable grocery and produce bags need to be washed after each usage or is it sufficient to wash them occasionally? To individuals who use bags at all times, it is sometimes difficult to get the correct balance between cleanliness and durability.

If anyone has experience with different bag wash techniques, I’d love to hear what works best for you. Do you follow manufacturer instructions, use gentle cycles, or rely on hand washing? Any tips, mistakes to avoid, or helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.
