’m looking into metal enclosures for coastal areas and trying to keep the cost as low as possible while still getting something that lasts.
From what I’ve learned so far, galvanized steel seems to be the most affordable option. The zinc coating gives some protection against rust, but it may need repainting or touch-ups over time. Aluminum costs a bit more, but it’s light, doesn’t rust, and usually holds up well if it has a good coating.
Of course, stainless steel (especially 316) is the best choice for salty environments, but the price can jump up fast, so I’m trying to avoid that unless it’s absolutely necessary.
If you’ve used enclosures near the coast, I’d love to hear what worked for you. Did galvanized steel hold up? Is aluminum worth the extra cost? Any coating or maintenance tips would also help. TIA!
