Shatkarma is a set of yogic cleansing techniques designed to purify the body and mind, forming an essential part of Hatha Yoga practice. There are six main types of shatkarma Neti (nasal cleansing), Dhauti (digestive tract cleansing), Basti (colon cleansing), Nauli (abdominal massage), Kapalabhati (skull shining breath), and Trataka (concentrated gazing). Each of these techniques serves a specific purpose, such as removing toxins, improving digestion, enhancing respiratory function, and sharpening mental focus. Practicing the different types of shatkarma regularly can help maintain balance between the body’s systems and promote overall health. For instance, Neti helps to clear the nasal passages and is beneficial for sinus-related issues. Dhauti cleanses the esophagus and stomach, while Basti focuses on the large intestine. Nauli strengthens abdominal muscles and supports digestive fire. Among all the types of shatkarma, Kapalabhati is widely practiced for its energizing effects and mental clarity. Trataka, on the other hand, develops concentration and inner vision. Understanding and practicing the types of shatkarma under expert guidance can lead to both physical and spiritual benefits.
