I've got a basic black leather jacket that fits well but looks pretty plain. Instead of buying new, I'm interested in learning how to customize a leather jacket myself. Anyone here tried DIY customization?

I'm thinking about adding some subtle details - maybe contrast stitching, different buttons, or small patches. Nothing too crazy, just want to make it more personal. My sewing skills are decent from making patches for my band, but I've never worked with leather.

What tools do I need? I've heard regular sewing machines can't handle thick leather. Is a leather needle enough, or do I need special equipment? Also wondering about thread types - should I match the existing thread or go with something contrasting?

For patches and additions, what's the best way to attach them without damaging the jacket? I've seen some cool examples online with painted designs too. Any recommendations for leather-safe paints or dyes?

My biggest concern is messing up an expensive jacket. Should I practice on scraps first? Where can I even get leather scraps for testing?

Budget for tools and materials is around $100. Is that realistic for getting started, or am I underestimating costs?

Really appreciate any guidance from folks who've tried customizing their own pieces!
